2026 Polimi Study Tour - Industrial Design

To further deepen the talent training model, improve the international education level of XJTU-POLIMI Joint School, and cultivate top-notch innovative design talents with an understanding of global industrial design trends, international vision, cross-cultural comprehension and communication capabilities as well as global competitiveness, the Joint School will select a number of outstanding Grade 2024 undergraduate students majoring in Industrial Design to join a short-term design exchange program in Lombardy, Italy during the 2026 summer term. Relevant matters are hereby notified as follows:

I. Introduction to Lombardy, Italy and Politecnico di Milano

Lombardy (Italian: Lombardia) is one of Italy’s largest administrative regions. It lies in the northern Italian Peninsula bordering Switzerland, with Milan as its capital and largest city. As Italy’s most economically developed region, Lombardy boasts a mature design service sector and serves as the country’s core economic hub, well-known for textiles, plastics, machine tools, leather, agriculture and food processing industries.

Founded in 1863 and located in Milan, Italy, Politecnico di Milano is a public research university committed to cultivating world-class industrial designers and engineers. As a member of the IDEA League (an alliance of top European engineering universities), Politecnico di Milano ranks 98th in the 2026 QS World University Rankings and 1st in Europe for Industrial Design.

II. Program Overview

1. Exchange Period: July 19 – July 31, 2026

2. Study Venues: Lecco Campus, Bovisa Campus and other areas in Lombardy, Italy

3. Program Content: Design research activities mainly including workshops, academic lectures and factory & enterprise visits

4. Credit Recognition: Students participating in this study visit program shall complete the follow-up training sessions of Design Practice-3 during the program (the School will coordinate all training arrangements) and take the unified course assessment.

5. Program Quota: 25 students

6. Program Fee: Tuition and teaching fees during the study visit will be covered by Politecnico di Milano. All other expenses shall be borne by students themselves. The estimated self-funded expenses are around 4,000 euros, including air tickets, local transportation in Italy, visa fees, insurance premiums, accommodation, meals, etc. The actual amount shall prevail.

III. Application Requirements

1. At least 18 years old by July 1, 2026

2. Excellent academic performance with spare learning capacity, sound moral conduct and empathy, no disciplinary sanctions during enrollment, physical and mental health, willingness to comply with management arrangements, and capability to finish all academic tasks in Italy smoothly

3. Eagerness to build global vision and strengthen cross-cultural understanding, communication and teamwork capabilities

IV. Selection Criteria

After application submission, the School will verify the compulsory course credit scores of eligible applicants covering the first semester of the 2024/25 academic year to the first semester of the 2025/26 academic year, excluding scores of physical education, military training, professional elective courses and general education elective courses.

Applicants will be ranked in descending order based on the above compulsory course scores. In case of tied scores, applicants will be sorted by their total scores of compulsory English courses. The top 35 applicants will be shortlisted for interviews. The final admission list of the top 25 students will be determined based on 70% compulsory course performance and 30% interview performance.

3. Application Deadline: 12:00, March 9, 2026

4. The School will organize interviews after the application deadline, scheduled to start at the beginning of the second semester of the 2025/26 academic year. Specific arrangements will be announced separately.

VI. Warm Reminders

1. The School will inform admitted students of follow-up arrangements and provide guidance on accommodation reservation, visa application, flight booking and other relevant procedures.

2. Admitted students shall attend the pre-departure orientation, complete the Letter of Commitment for Overseas Study of Xi’an Jiaotong University and the Approval Form for Short-term Official Overseas Visit of Xi’an Jiaotong University Undergraduate/Graduate Students, and strictly complete the university’s official overseas visit approval procedures.

Students who fail to complete official overseas approval procedures will not be dispatched.

3. All applicants who submit materials shall follow notifications in grade WeChat groups to scan the QR code and join the designated WeChat group.
