Ⅰ. Program Features

Industrial Design is an interdisciplinary discipline integrating science and technology with art and humanities, and a comprehensive discipline involving mechanical engineering, computer science, ergonomics, sociology and other fields. The Department of Industrial Design at Xi’an Jiaotong University was founded in 1998, enrolled its first undergraduate students in Industrial Design in 1999, was accredited to confer Master of Arts degrees in 2000, Master of Engineering in Industrial Design in 2001, and a second-level doctoral program in Engineering Art Design in 2002. As a member of the World Design Organization (WDO) and a "Famous Specialty with Distinctive Features" of Shaanxi Province, the program enjoys professional advantages in product development, ergonomics, human-computer interaction, and interdisciplinary integration of art and engineering.

The Industrial Design program at XJTU-POLIMI Joint School is established on the basis of the strong engineering foundation of Xi’an Jiaotong University and the world's top design strength of Politecnico di Milano, through a powerful alliance and complementary advantages. It makes full use of the high-quality educational resources of the two universities in the fields of design and engineering, aiming to build a world-class industrial design discipline integrating intelligence, digitalization and artistry.

Ⅱ. Educational Objectives

Based on the international frontier of industrial design development and on the interdisciplinary basis of "New Engineering, Broad Design, and Emphasis on Interdisciplinarity", the program cultivates high-quality interdisciplinary professionals with cutting-edge academic theoretical knowledge and practical design technologies. While focusing on cultivating students' industrial design capabilities, the program attaches importance to enhancing their innovative practical capabilities through interdisciplinary integration, as well as humanistic quality, international vision and leadership.

In terms of education, the program is committed to cultivating qualified builders and successors of socialism with Chinese characteristics who advocate science, seek truth from facts, are diligent and down-to-earth, have a strong sense of social responsibility, and achieve all-round development of moral, intellectual, physical, aesthetic and labor abilities. Professionally, through curriculum study and professional practical training, students will master the basic theories, basic knowledge and design methods of design and related disciplines, possess excellent design expression abilities, proficient computer-aided design abilities, and the ability to integrate knowledge from different disciplines. They will be innovative and culturally and artistically accomplished, able to integrate knowledge from various disciplines, and become backbones and leading talents in the future design field in positions such as design and development, culture and creativity, planning and management, teaching and scientific research.

Ⅲ. Graduation Requirements

Graduates of this program shall meet the following requirements in knowledge, ability and quality:

1.Possess extensive theoretical knowledge in engineering technology, humanities and social sciences, natural sciences and other disciplines, high scientific literacy, humanistic feelings and artistic accomplishment, and sound physical and mental quality.

2.Possess solid theoretical knowledge related to industrial design, and master relevant knowledge in product development, design and aesthetics, engineering and technology, management and planning, individual and teamwork, economy and regulations, professional responsibilities of designers and other aspects.

3.Master methods and skills in related fields of industrial design, deeply understand and flexibly apply interdisciplinary knowledge, and possess strong abilities in design expression, design creation, hands-on practice, as well as comprehensive analysis and problem-solving.

4.Possess good communication skills and teamwork spirit, be able to conduct innovation through interdisciplinary integration of knowledge, and have an international vision and a sense of social responsibility.

Ⅴ. Duration of Study, Degree Conferral and Graduation Requirements

Duration of Study: 4 years

Degrees Conferred:

Bachelor of Engineering (Industrial Design), Xi’an Jiaotong University

Laurea in Ingegneria della Produzione Industriale, Politecnico di Milano

Graduation Requirements: Students who complete 151 credits specified in the professional training program and 8 credits of extracurricular practice, meet the graduation requirements stipulated in the training program, pass the military training assessment, satisfy the foreign language proficiency requirements of Xi’an Jiaotong University, and pass the National Student Physical Health Standard test shall be permitted to graduate and be awarded a graduation certificate. Those who meet the requirements of the Regulations on Undergraduate Academic Management and Degree Conferral of Xi’an Jiaotong University shall be conferred the Bachelor of Engineering degree by Xi’an Jiaotong University. Meanwhile, those who meet the requirements for undergraduate degree conferral of Politecnico di Milano shall be conferred the Laurea in Ingegneria della Produzione Industriale by Politecnico di Milano.
