Electrical Engineering and Automation

I. Introduction

In face of historical backgrounds of climate changes and environmental crises as well as the goal of carbon neutrality, the program focuses on cultivating basic theoretical, professional technical and practical innovation capabilities related to generation, transfer, conversion, control, storage and utilization of electrified energies. It is a highly comprehensive professional learning program which covers principles of electrical engineering, solid-state chemistry, energy technology, electronic information technology, economic management and other disciplines. The main feature of this program consists in combining strong electricity with weak electricity, information with physics, as well as materials, elements and equipment with systems. In this program, students are mainly trained in respect of fundamental knowledge and skills about principles of electrical engineering, automatic control, energy conversion and storage, internet technologies, power materials and equipment, engineering management and so on, in order that they will master basic abilities to solve complex engineering problems regarding equipment design and manufacturing, system analysis and operation control in the field of electrical engineering for realizing the objective of carbon neutrality. After graduation, the students can embark on technological development, system scheduling, equipment design and maintenance, production management, teaching, scientific research and other work in departments formulating environmental and energy policies, energy companies, power grid corporations, enterprises manufacturing power equipment, scientific research institutes, institutions of higher learning, other enterprises and public institutions.

In 1908, Xi’an Jiaotong University launched electrical engineering and automation as a program, from which Chinese higher education on electrical engineering derived. This is a national first-class program for undergraduates which relies upon electrical engineering, an A+discipline of Xi’an Jiaotong University. Equipped with state key laboratory of electrical insulation and power equipment, state teaching demonstration center of electrical engineering and electronic experiments, as well as training bases for highly skilled talents, it is one of electrical programs with the most powerful strengths among national disciplines, the most competent faculty and the most abundant teaching resources which cultivate the most outstanding talents. This program adheres to the tradition of “standing at a high starting point, laying a solid foundation, satisfying rigorous requirements and attaching importance to practices”. Consistently aimed at national talent needs for electric power and energy construction, it practises “electrical +” concept for talent cultivation. Vigorously promoting industry-education integration and combination of technological elements with vocational education, it constantly explores and leads the world’s first-class undergraduate education of electrical engineering with Chinese characteristics. Numerous excellent leading electrical engineering talents have been cultivated in this program.

II. Training objectives

This program fosters students for all-round development in morality, intelligence, physique, aesthetics and labour skills. It trains them to observe professional ethics and norms, with a sense of social responsibility. In this program, students will firmly grasp knowledge about mathematics, natural sciences and interdisciplinary fields in regards to generation, transfer, conversion, control, storage and utilization of electrified energies. They will be able to solve complicated engineering problems on electrical engineering and related fields for realizing the objective of carbon neutrality. They will become versatile leading creative talents for embarking on technology development, system planning and scheduling, equipment design and maintenance, production management, teaching, scientific research and other work in departments formulating environmental and energy policies, energy companies, power grid corporations, enterprises manufacturing power equipment, scientific research institutes, institutions of higher learning, other enterprises and public institutions. The graduates will be highly competitive at home and abroad. They will be able to play roles in key technical posts as backbones and leaders. They will be competent with a relatively high awareness of innovation and entrepreneurship.

Through about five years of learning and industry practice, the students will have the following abilities:

Objective 1: To be with a strong sense of social responsibility and decent humanistic qualities; to show universal humanistic care and develop views on sustainable energy and environment; to observe professional ethics and norms.

Objective 2: To be able to comprehensively utilize basic theories, professional knowledge and skills mastered as well as modern tools to conduct creative research and solve complex problems about electrical engineering; to be capable to independently or lead a team to undertake technology development, system planning and scheduling, equipment design and maintenance in complicated engineering projects.

Objective 3: To maintain professional ethics and a sense of social responsibility as engineers; to be able to propose leading solutions to complicated problems concerning electrical engineering by comprehensively considering environment, safety, laws, regulations, cultures, ethics, sustainable development and other factors in combination with features of electrical engineering practices.Objective 4: To foster broad international outlooks; to become cable to completely acquiring and utilizing domestic and foreign information resources; to develop relatively powerful skills in cross-cultural communication and collaboration, organization and management; to become capable of playing roles as backbones and leaders in teams.

Objective 5: To keep on learning and become able to adapt to industry developments and changes well.

III. Graduation Requirements

In respect of this program, the graduation requirements are as follows:

A. Engineering knowledge: To be able to solve complex problems on electrical engineering with basic and professional knowledge about mathematics, natural sciences and engineering.

B. Problem analysis: To identify and convey complex problems on electrical engineering based on fundamental principles of mathematics, natural sciences and engineering sciences; to analyze complicated problems regarding electrical engineering through literature research, to reach effective solutions.

C. Design / development solutions: To design solutions to complex problems on electrical engineering; to design systems, units (components) or processes which satisfy certain needs; to reflect consciousness of innovation in design, considering environment, health, safety, laws, cultures, society and other factors.

D. Research: To study complex problems about electrical engineering based on scientific principles and with scientific methods, including designing experiments, analyzing and interpreting data, and reaching appropriate, effective solutions via information integration.

E. Use of modern tools: To develop, select and employ proper technologies, resources, modern engineering tools and information in respect of complicated problems on electrical engineering, including forecasting and simulating complex engineering problems, and understanding their limitations.

F. Engineering and society: To reasonably analyze and evaluate impacts of specialized electrical engineering practices and solutions to complex problems regarding electrical engineering upon environment, society, health, safety, laws and cultures based on background knowledge related to electrical engineering, and understand what responsibilities they shall shoulder.

G. Environment and sustainable development: To understand and evaluate impacts of electrical engineering practices specific to complex engineering problems upon energies, environment, social sustainable development and objective of carbon neutrality.

H. Professional norms: To develop qualities of humanistic social sciences and a sense of social responsibility; to comprehend and obey professional ethics and norms on engineering, and perform responsibilities in electrical engineering practices.

I. Individuals and teams: To play roles as individuals, team members and persons in charge in multi-disciplinary teams.

J: Communication: To effectively communicate and exchange with industry peers and the public about complex problems on electrical engineering, including writing reports, designing manuscripts, making statements, clearly conveying or responding to instructions. To maintain broad international outlooks, and become able to communicate and exchange under cross-cultural backgrounds.

K. Project management: To understand and master management principles and economic decision-making methods for electrical engineering, and apply them under multi-disciplinary environment.

L. Lifelong learning: To be conscious of autonomous and lifelong learning, with abilities to keep on learning and adapt to development.

V. School System, Degree Granting and Graduation Conditions

School system: 4 years

Degree:Bachelor’s Degree of Engineering of Xi’an Jiaotong University

Degree:Bachelor’s Degree of Engineering of POLIMI

Graduation conditions: A student will be allowed to graduate if only he or she has obtained 154 credits as specified by the professional training program and 8 credits in extracurricular practices (no less than 2 credits from courses on “innovation and entrepreneurship), no less than 2 credits from aesthetic courses, and no less than 32 credit hours from labor education). Students can choose to graduate as common, scientific research, interdisciplinary or innovation and entrepreneurship talents based on their personal interests and expertise. They shall satisfy the graduation requirements for morality, intelligence, physique, aesthetics and labour skills. In addition, they shall meet the requirements under the Detailed Training Rules of Xi’an Jiaotong University for Undergraduates’ Labor Education, Detailed Implementation Rules of Xi’an Jiaotong University for Taking College English Courses, and Detailed Implementation Rules of Xi’an Jiaotong University for Taking General Knowledge Courses. Furthermore, they have to satisfy the requirements of Xi’an Jiaotong University for undergraduates’ internationalized training experiences. Only if the students have been recognized to have met the aforementioned requirements will they be allowed to graduate and granted the diploma. They will be awarded the degree and degree certificate if they comply with the Rules of Xi’an Jiaotong University for Undergraduates’ Status Management and Degree Granting. Besides, a student will be granted the Bachelor’s Degree of Engineering of POLIMI if he satisfies this university’s requirements for being awarded the Bachelor’s Degree.
