I. Characteristics of the Major

Industrial design is an interdisciplinary subject that integrates science and technology with art and humanities and a comprehensive discipline involving mechanical engineering, computer science, ergonomics, and sociology. The Department of Industrial Design of XJTU was founded in 1998 and enrolled the first batch of undergraduates majoring in Industrial Design in 1999. It was approved as the master’s degree awarding unit of art in 2000, the master’s degree awarding unit of industrial design engineering in 2001, and the second-level doctor’s degree awarding unit of art design in 2002. As a member unit of the World Design Organization (WDO) and the “Characteristic Famous Major” of Shaanxi Province, the major has professional advantages in product development, ergonomics, human-computer interaction, and art and engineering crossing.

The major of Industrial Design of the Joint School of Design and Innovation is set up through win-win cooperation and advantage complementation based on the strong engineering foundation of XJTU and the world’s top design strength of Politecnico di Milano. It fully utilizes the superior educational resources of the two universities in design and engineering and aims to create a world-class industrial design discipline integrating intelligence, digitalization, and artistry.
