Background


In Mar., 2019, General Secretary Xi Jinping paid a state visit to Italy, and Italy became the first member of the Group of Seven to join the Belt and Road Initiative, which greatly encouraged the enthusiasm and confidence of the university in the cooperation with Politecnico di Milano (POLIMI). POLIMI expressed the hope to implement the consensus reached during General Secretary Xi’s visit to Italy through cooperation between the two universities.

History of Cooperation

In 2009, Xi’an Jiaotong University (XJTU) sent a delegation to POLIMI, Italy and signed a Double Cultivation Agreement on Doctors, starting the formal cooperation between the two universities.

In 2012, the two universities further signed a Double Cultivation Agreement on Masters of Electrical Engineering to cultivate masters of three-year schooling and explore a double master cultivation mode of “equal exchange, mutual tuition exemption, and two-way communication”.

In 2015, Italian President Sergio Mattarella attended the opening ceremony of the new semester at POLIMI, and the university introduced to him the Joint School of Design and Innovation Project with XJTU.

In 2016, President Wang Shuguo was invited to visit POLIMI, and the two universities signed the Joint School of Design and Innovation Project on Apr. 7.

On Apr. 20, 2018, the Standing Committee of XJTU agreed to establish a leading group and a working group for the preparation of the Joint School of Design and Innovation.

On Sept. 7, 2019, Prof. Ferruccio Resta, President of POLIMI, together with 5 vice presidents, 14 deans, and professors, visited XJTU and unveiled the plaque of the XJTU-POLIMI Joint School of Design and Innovation and the Joint Innovation Center; the Joint School of Design and Innovation was officially settled in the Western China Science and Technology Innovation Harbour.

On Apr. 22, 2022, the XJTU-POLIMI Joint School of Design and Innovation was approved by the Ministry of Education as a Chinese-foreign cooperatively-run school and a non-independent legal entity.

In Sept., 2022, the Joint School of Design and Innovation welcomed the first batch of undergraduates.
